“Getting better from depression requires a lifelong commitment for my life’s sake and for the sake of those who love me.” — Susan Polis Schutz, American Poet

Depression pulls you down into the depths of darkness. When you succumb to its pressure, the world before you seems to blur and your thoughts become fuzzy. Depression affects an individual’s mental state, causing their life to fall into a downward spiral. Bringing themselves back to the surface often turns out to be a difficult journey, as the hands trying to reach out to them and pull them back up can seem like enemies.

To avoid any sort of interaction with others and to keep them out for good, they erect brick walls around them. Anyone who dares to break down the walls is met with anger and resentment. Still, it is a chance people’s loved ones have to take because if they do not, they will lose the joyous, outgoing, and optimistic person to depression.

However, people going through the perils of depression need to gain control of their thoughts if they want to see the beautiful rays of sunlight smiling down at them again. If they keep distancing themselves from the world, they will find themselves only in the company of their negative thoughts – negative thoughts that one day can cause a lot of grief to them and their families.

Do Not Give Depression the Permission to Conquer You

Depression presents itself as an unconquerable disease only because we let it. You give permission to depression to come and swallow you up. People who allow depression to overcome them find themselves in a cage, trapped by their own thoughts. What they do not realize is that they have had the key all along to free them from the cage, which they created for themselves.

They need to turn the key, let themselves out, and seek treatment just as the following two well known personalities have done.

Angelina Jolie, Actress

Angelina Jolie is known for her contributions to both movies and the undeveloped countries. Even the actress with the heart of gold is not immune to depression. When her mother passed away in 2007, she slid deep into a depressive state. “[…] I was going into a very dark place, and I wasn’t capable of getting up in the morning, so I signed up for [Wanted] that would force me to be active.”

The actress spoke about her depression in the WSJ magazine where she opened up that it was her humanitarian work that helped pull her through the feelings of emptiness.

Angelina’s role as goodwill ambassador for UNHCR in 2001, gave her a place to “put herself”.  The star has done an admirable job of representing the organization, making five to seven trips per year to the world’s trouble spots, including Iraq and Turkey, to visit Syrian refugees.

Pushing herself out of her self-created comfort helped her fight depression, and more importantly, her shift in focus to helping others brought her thoughts to a higher plane and more positive place.

Mad Men action Jon Hamm is another  example of winning the battle against depression. At the age of 20, the actor’s father passed away and he fell deep into chronic depression. He sought the help of therapy and antidepressants to help him recover from his immanent downward spiral into depression.

“You can change your brain chemistry enough to think: I want to get up in the morning; I don’t want to sleep until four in the afternoon.” The actor was able to break from the confines of depression with the aid of medication that uplifted his mood and made him feel energetic.
