In a study published in Molecular Psychiatry by researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, they found that feelings of sadness led to increased levels of inflammatory proteins in the blood which is linked to an increased risk of comorbid diseases which includes heart disease, stroke, and metabolic syndrome.

Previous research had showed that major depression was a contributing factor to other diseases, but scientists did not know why this was. Researchers of this study set out to find the reason there is a connection between depression and increased risk of comorbid diseases.

Scientists have known for some time that when a person is under stress, the brain has neurotransmitters called opiods which are released to reduce the impact of the stress on the individual. However, when this process is disrupted or dysregulated, opiod neurotransmitters may have negative effects on the body. The immune system can be altered as a response to stress, and this can lead to increased risk of other medical diseases.

In a previous study by the same researchers, they found that inflammatory cytokine called interleukin-18 (IL-18) was seen in increased numbers in those affected by depression. IL-18 has been found to be associated with cardiovascular disease, so this was significant finding and led to questions about the link between depression and IL-18.

They found that at baseline, the depressed individuals showed more opioid activity in their brains then the healthy individuals. In one experiment, participants were asked to think of something neutral. The result was that the opioid activity went down in the brains of both depressed and healthy individuals, and the opoid decrease was proportional to a decrease in IL-18 in the same people, suggesting a connection between opiods and IL-18.

Next, they were asked to focus on a sad event in their life that brought them sadness, and this time, an increase in the amount of opioids released into the brain were seen. Furthermore, this increase was proportional to the increased IL-18 concentration found in blood, as well. The group of depressed participants, showed increases in the level of IL-18 and when they had neutral thoughts, IL-18 was seen to be reduced. After the depressed individuals had been asked to think of a neutral thought, then a sad one, the neutral thought persisted and improved mood and lowered the IL-18 levels in the blood.

This research is promising, as one of the researchers said “if we could implement psychotherapies to improve mood in depressed people, then we could potentially normalize IL-18 and in the long-term, potentially reduce risks of various comorbid medical illnesses”.
