Freeze Your Body to Wait for a Cancer Cure?
Since the beginning of time, man has pursued longevity and the preservation of youthfulness. We imagine ourselves enjoying agelessness and strength on into centuries of life. If we had enough time and energy, we’d be able to fulfill all our ambitions. Maybe even be alive for a cancer cure.
When “Captain America” revived from his frozen state on a WW2 military plane, he was as handsome, young and strong as the day the plane had crashed. —Of course, that was sci-fi.
Or was it?
US Facility Freezes Teen’s Corpse
High Court Judge Peter Jackson, in the U.K., recently granted permission to a 14-year old girl to have her remains frozen in a facility in America. The Associated Press published this statement last November 18th. Hard to believe?
“I want to live and live longer and I think that in the future they may find a cure for my cancer and wake me up,” she wrote to the judge, “Being cryopreserved gives me a chance to be cured and woken up —even in hundreds of years’ time.”
The girl’s last wishes were granted in the first case of its kind in England –and possibly the world. For this privilege, the fee was a mere 37,000 pounds ($46,730 USD). –A steal at the price, if one considers the price of electricity these days, especially over a period of 50 to 2 or 300 years or so. . .
Remember, Captain America’s body was frozen naturally. Plus, he had had a scientific cocktail of mysterious chemicals injected into him beforehand. —So, not exactly the same scenario.
To Be or Not to Be a “Capsickle”
Laws probably haven’t been established to deal with such an unproven technique as preserving people by freezing. In fact, freezing humans is illegal in much of the world.
The girl’s father was at first opposed, concerned for her well-being and what it might be like for her if she did wake up in 200 years. “She may be left in a desperate situation,” he said, pointing out that she would still be only 14.”
Later, he agreed. “This is the last and only thing she has asked from me,” he said.
