You may have heard about lucid dreaming – a state of sleep in which you are completely aware and in control of your dreams. Galantamine, a natural supplement, has become known as THE lucid dreaming pill. How does it work? What does it do? We will be covering the basics of Galantamine in today’s post.
Galantamine is in fact not new to this world. It has been used for centuries by the Chinese as a memory enhancer. There have been reports that the ancient Greeks knew of its mind-inducing effects.
How Does Galantamine Work?
The supplement is known as a cholinergic agent. This refers to the process that the brain conducts. The cholinergic agent (galantamine) blocks the action of acetylcholinesterase, which breaks down the neurotransmitter, acetycholine. This temporarily leads to increased memory function, dream recall and lucidity.
Where Does Galantamine Come From?
Originally, galantamine was derived from plant sources such as the common daffodil. However, today it is extracted from red spider lily, the Golden spider lily, or from the Snowdrop plant. Galantamine was approved by the FDA in 2001 and has been used by many for various reasons. Alzheimers disease and those with mild dementia have used it for its memory-enhancing properties and many others have used it to enhance their dreams.
What is Galantamine’s Effect on Dreams?
Dream researchers have known since about 1975, that acetycholine and its inhibitors are involved with sleep in some way. Neuroscientists have also known that high acetylcholine levels in the brain are linked to preventing memory loss.
It has been found that galantamine promotes dreaming sleep. The supplement acts quickly to increase the length of REM sleep, and also helps with recalling dreams once awoken.
In 2004, Stephen LaBerge conducted studies with galantamine and its effect on lucid dreaming in order to apply for a patent for the use of cholinesterase inhibitors like galantimine to promote lucid dreaming. His results showed that subjects who took galatamine experienced more ludic dreaming than those who took placebos. His study also noted a warning – that galatamine was associated with a higher frequency of sleep paralysis and a 40% increase in estimated time awake during the night. This is something to be aware of, as galantamine does have some side effects. Further studies by Thomas Yushak confirmed that galantamine increases lucid dreaming.
As mentioned, galantamine has some side effects. The most common physical effects are: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and weight loss.
It also has psychological side effects. It has been shown to increase awakening during the night, and to induce sleep paralysis.
How to Take Galantamine?
It is recommended you take the supplement in the middle of the night. This will help to take advantage of the longer REM cycles that occur later in the night.
It is also recommended you combine taking galantamine with mental practices. For example, know what you hope to achieve by lucid dreaming, and prepare yourself for the experience. Don’t just take the pill after watching a horror movie or after a night of too many glasses of wine or beer. Being mindful will make the experience better. Mindfulness is very important to lucid dreaming, so practicing this during the day and before bed will help you become more lucid at night.
