Metformin is a prescribed medication that is often used to treat Type 2 diabetes. It helps to control the amount of glucose made by your liver, as well as improving your bodies response to insulin. The medication also works to help with weight loss. Many people use Metformin for PCOS, weight loss, diabetes and even cancer. The following testimonials discuss real peoples’ experiences with Metformin. Testimonials have been found from forums on the Internet (cited as so).
“25 years old – diagnosed with PCOS at 16. Always have been overweight, abnormal hair growth & irregular periods. I’m “pre-diabetic” with diabetes on both sides of my family so taking Metformin as a preventative measure. I’ve been on metformin for 10 days and have already lost 3 pounds with no significant diet change & got my period on my own without having to take medication for the first time in years. Less hungry, especially at night. I did have terrible diarrhea the first few days but that has resolved. Today started with a horrible metallic taste in my mouth which I’m hoping will subside soon because I feel pretty good otherwise! My advice – don’t get discouraged with the stomach issues in the beginning – push through!” [Source]
“I have always had issues with irregular periods since my first period at 17 years old. I summed it up to my body just being complicated. When I turned 25 my periods started getting farther and farther apart. I’d have a 25 day cycle and then he next would be 90 days. I ended up in the ER with two ruptured cysts and one the size of a baseball. After years of feeling tired all the time and strange hairs on my breasts and random places I was finally diagnosed with PCOS. I had also been trying to conceive for one year. My doctor started me on metformin 500mg once a day. Just 3 weeks later I conceived and 9 days after that I had a positive pregnancy test. After a entire year of trying!!! I feel so much better on this medicine.” [Source]
So here’s my story, I never had regular periods, maybe 2-3x times a year. I got married at the age of 24 and after a year or two of trying I went to a doctor and she said it may be pcos. Never really went back to that doctor(wasn’t crazy about her). At the age of 28, I said enough is enough, headed to a fertility clinic where they definitely said I had pcos. They started me on metformin as well as Ovasitol (a supplement for women with pcos…it’s pretty new, however ladies these 2 together….MIRACLE!!!!) after just 5 months on these 2 drugs and one round of femara(a pill you take for 3-5 days that help with ovulation) I was pregnant. good luck!” [Source]
“I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 13, I haven’t had a natural period in YEARS. 5 days ago,I started Metformin 500mg a day, and today “Aunt Flo” came to town, not only that but I only down 5lbs in 5days and I feel pretty amazing right now. It has been a GREAT week!!” [Source]
“My husband and I were trying to have a child for seven years and we had no success. I was diagnosed with PCOS and I was put on Metformin. Four months later I was pregnant. It was such a wonder for us, as I had 2 cycles of Chlomid (unsuccessfully). I hope this will help someone else because infertility can be heartbreaking.” [Source]
“I’m not diabetic but have been on Metformin, 500 mg/day, for over two years. The Mayo Clinic published a trial, in the summer of 2012, seemingly indicating the drug increased progression free survival in diabetic women. I showed the report to my onc and told him I wanted to go on the drug. Being as open minded, flexible and creative as he is, he said fine. As I’m also injecting Iscador, and take 30 supplements a day, and, for 16 months have been on Tamoxafin as well, I’ve no way of knowing precisely what Metformin is doing. All I know is that, as of yesterday, when my CT scan was NED, I’m in a 16 month third remission, after two recurrences. I’m 3c, high grade, serous, optimal debulking at MSKCC on May 11, 2010.”
“Pre-diabetic. Placed on Metformin. The first day severe dirreahea but after that nothing. I take 500mg twice a day at breakfast and dinner..Don’t craved sweets as much. Which is great and when i do eat i feel full fast. Don’t know about any weight loss but i do feel a lot better since taking metformin. But i only been taking it for two days… Other than having dirreahea the first day. I have no other reactions. I drink plenty of water and sparkling water too…I’m also getting in the habit of eating healthier.” [Source]
I have been on Metformin for the last four years and have not encounter any side efects. I keep my blood sugar in check with an A1C of 6.2 to 6.4. Of course a healthy diet and walking daily has complemented these results [Source]
“My mother is on this drug and it has done wonders for her. Her insulin is controlled and she has lost a significant amount of weight on it. She is so happy and feels amazing on it. No negative side effects. Thank you makers of metformin. The doctor who prescribed it was so knowledgeable and he really helped my mom adjust and overcome the diagnosis.” [Source]
Metformin (Glucophage generic) works very well without any side effects (maybe a small bit of diarrhea and gas – but that helps getting rid of my constipation). I am NOT overweight. In great shape with running, playing tennis and golf, etc. Age 65. Never was overweight. Got diabetes from drinking way too much Coca Cola and eating too much sweets (donuts, cake, candies, etc.). Always burned off the sugar so never put on weight. Never knew sugar was a poison that affects metabolism. Started taking metformin (3 X 800 daily dosage two years ago. With diet changes, brought down my blood glucose level from 358 to 130, and A1C from 15.9 to 6.7. Not out of the woods yet, but huge improvement and metformin is the only drug that works for me” [Source]
“Prescribed metformin 3 years ago after completion of chemo. Currently, I am 3.5 years NED for stage 3C. No adverse effects from metformin. (NED means no evidence of disease)”
“Hi, I lead the study published in the Lancett about 2 years ago, and started it with my chemo for inoperable high grade serous ppc. I had a dramatic reduction of my ca125, from 770 to 40 in the first 3 weeks of chemo and it was soon in single figures and has remained so. My end of chemo pet scan was clear and ca125 5-6. Remained on metformin and have been in remission 12 m, had no side- effects, am not diabetic, and will continue it”
As you can see, Metformin has helped many people in a variety of ways including helping women with PCOS conceive, helping people lose weight, fend off cancer, and control their diabetes.
