Sleep Medications

Are You Getting Enough Sleep?

Several studies have shown that those who frequently lack sleep have a higher risk of stroke, obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Besides feeling irritable, distracted, and exhausted, a lack of sleep wreaks havoc on one’s sex life, and that could eventually lead to relationship problems. Sleep medications that increase deep sleep, generic medications that help with anxiety and sleep, sleep medications that help you stay asleep, and medications that increase REM sleep are some of the kinds of sleep medications growing in popularity these days.

The Zombie Effect

Sleep loss impairs concentration, attention, alertness, reasoning, and problem-solving which makes learning more difficult. There are medications that help you sleep, if you can’t get to sleep on your own. A lack of sleep can make you dumb because it’s during various sleep cycles that memory is consolidated in the brain. That means if you don’t get enough sleep you’ll forget what you learned during the day.

Pulling an “all-nighter” just isn’t smart. Though it may buy you more time, it doesn’t buy you more quality time –but it does rob you of today’s alertness. You may be a night owl or a night person, but staying awake all night long on a regular basis could turn you into a zombie.

When the body is sleep deprived, the brain produces higher amyloid beta levels which build plaque in the interior blood vessels of the brain. That buildup of plaque is what leads to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Getting enough sleep now is not just important for your health today, but a significant sleep deficit can detrimentally affect your future. That is the vital importance of sleep. Sleep is not a waste of time. It’s vital to our survival and our well-being, our intelligence, our productivity, our future and, last but not least, our sex drive.

It may be smarter to use medications to sleep rather than lie awake all night. Find out what suits your situation best, whether it’s sleep medications for bipolar disorders, medications for sleep apnea, or the strongest homeopathic sleep medications. Nowadays there are top sleep medications that are very effective, as well as nonaddictive sleep medications.

How Much Sleep is Adequate?

Adults should get a full 7 to 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night.  Children under the age of 12 should get a full 11 to 12 hours of sleep, while adolescents should get between 8 to 10 hours a night. It’s a fact that at the childhood and adolescence stages, kids need more sleep, no matter how much they may resist it. Parents may wonder, “Which medications do you give a child to put them to sleep?” However, even the best list of medications used for sleep won’t compare to the loving intervention of a parent. (Patch, These are 2 SEO’s. The other words were original – from my head, but I changed it a bit anyway. Hope this will work!)

Kids may require a little encouragement to turn off all their electronics, pull the headphones out of their ears and allow nature to take over. It may help if you tell them that those who sleep well grow well. —And learn well. That’s part of the beneficial nature of sleep.

There are natural medications to help children sleep if it’s necessary. Their bodies are still growing and growth happens during the wee hours of the night while they’re sleeping. Children and teens need sleep to grow and those who don’t get sufficient sleep on a regular basis may not reach their full growth potential. If you’re concerned, check out some sleep medications that help teens and toddler sleep aid medications.

Want Intelligent Kids?

When parents suspect their children are getting insufficient sleep, it’s important to monitor the situation. If all else fails, they may need to call sleep medications for children into play, if only for a short period of time until the problem is resolved. We all want our kids to be as clever as they can be.

In the end, the risks of sleep medications may need to be weighed against the risks of sleep deprivation in our growing offspring. Though addiction is a concern, parents may want to know what medications can be used to help children sleep. Non benzodiazepine sleep medications are alternative sleep medications that involve less risk for children.

What Causes Insomnia?

We’re spending more and more time online on our hand-held devices, laptops and computers, up all hours of the night watching light-projected images on blue screens and passing messages back and forth across the planet. Light entering the eyes activates the production of serotonin in the body which is the hormone that helps to keep us awake. Serotonin is a natural cause of wakefulness. The counterpart to serotonin is melatonin, one of the natural medications for sleep.

Until electricity helped turn night into day in our world, medications to help you sleep were almost unheard of because we could rely on our natural body clocks that were aligned to the sun. Now, our cities never sleep. —That doesn’t mean we don’t need to. Nowadays there are some of the best sleep medications over the counter.

A Typical Night

We lie down and close our eyes to sleep but our brain is buzzing like a hive of bees. Some of you have the need for sleep medications that stop your mind from thinking and feel, “I have a high tolerance to medications and nothing helps me to sleep”. Although your inner dialog is on a rant, maybe you can turn it to your advantage by telling each part of your body to relax.

Believe it or not, you can turn that raging inner dialog to your advantage. All you have to do is tell each part of your body to relax and go to sleep.

It sounds funny, but it often works to lie in a comfortable position and instruct every separate member of your body to relax and go to sleep. Start at your toes and feet, then work up the spine to the crown of your head. Oftentimes, using this method, you’re asleep before you finish. There’s just something about deliberately placing all your concentration on relaxing.

Deep Darkness

We need the dark. Darkness is one of the best medications for sleep. When the sun sets, natural darkness activates the production of melatonin, one of the most effective sleep medications. Don’t be afraid of the dark. Embrace it.  Make your bedroom as dark as possible.

With the advent of the internet, light and signals constantly activate our neurons making it even more difficult for our body clock to realize when it’s night time. All this stimulation of the brain and all the light entering our eyes tells our biorhythms to keep us awake. So, we look for medications for sleep apnea, sleep medications for anxiety, and tell ourselves we need sleep medications for insomnia, anxiety sleep medications or miracle sleep medications that stop your mind from thinking. The natural procedure of falling asleep with the darkness is all but a thing of the past, vaguely remembered in our genes.

Our new generation requires medications prescribed for sleep deprivation, sleep medications over the counter, sleep medications for anxiety, medications for shift work sleep disorder, sleep medications for the elderly, safe sleep medications during pregnancy, sleep medications that prolong sleep, —we even use sleep medications to help children sleep.

Are Prescription Sleep Medications a Normal Part of Life?

Medications for sleep have become commonplace. In fact, sleep medications are a necessity for most of us. As our body becomes accustomed to the sleep aid medications we’re on, they become less effective and sleep alludes us so that we go on the hunt for new sleep medications and more effective, strong sleep medications, always seeking the best medications for sleep.

Not only has digital mania sabotaged our sleep patterns, but our obsession with caffeine may have something to do with the massive upsurge of sleeplessness over the past couple of decades. We’re as addicted to our cell phones as we are to our coffee and cigarettes –and visa versa.

Bumper Sticker Wisdom

A wise bumper sticker reads, “Get off the phone and drive!” —It had to be said.

With the rise in insomnia, narcolepsy and other sleep disorders, it stands to reason that there are many sleepy drivers on the road at any given time.  Add cellphones to that scenario and we’re in big trouble.  Unfortunately, large quantities of caffeine are the sleep driving medications of choice which serve to prolong the vicious cycle of night-time insomnia.

New sleep medications must be strong enough to overcome caffeine-induced insomnia. No wonder everyone’s looking for medications used for sleep difficulties. Even the strongest homeopathic sleep medications and anti anxiety medications for sleep are up against many unknown, unnatural forces that we face in this new world of uncertainties and inconsistencies where people never get off the phone.  —Not even to drive.

Is Coffee Addiction Keeping You Awake at Night?

Could it be that our need for medications prescribed for sleep deprivation, or sleep anxiety medications and those extra strong sleep medications is due, at least in part, to our addiction to caffeine?

What we need to remember is that caffeine is a drug.  In moderate doses, caffeine improves our ability to concentrate, our reaction times, reasoning skills and memory.  So often throughout the day whenever we start feeling sleepy, our first instinct is to grab a cup of coffee.  Not only does it help keep us focused, but it is a comforting drink that we have in common with each other.

For many of us, that cup of java is part of our lifestyle that complements our busy work day and bonds us with our fellow man.  Coffee is everywhere.  It’s a national symbol.  It’s a habit.  We just can’t live without it.  That’s because caffeine is addictive.  Most of us are coffee junkies, whether we want to admit it or not.

Much of our work is fueled by coffee, supported by caffeine and achieved under the influence of our addiction. We “medicate” ourselves with coffee but don’t consider that coffee may be one of the medications causing rem sleep behavior disorder. We convince ourselves that our inability to sleep has nothing to do with the four cups of coffee we drank today. —Four large cups of coffee.

Chemical Effect of Caffeine on Human Biology

Caffeine blocks chemical signals to the brain, preventing us from feeling sleepy.  It takes three to five hours for the body to break down caffeine, even if you have taken sleep anxiety medications. Caffeine stays in our blood up to 6 hours and is one of the medications that affect sleep negatively. Black tea is another one of the medications that affect sleep.

Not only do caffeinated drinks keep us awake but, as we all know, they can cause irritability, nervousness and even bring on panic attacks. Medications to help us sleep need to be strong enough to overcome the drugs we’ve been using all day. After a day of furious mind activity, we feel the need for sleep medications that stop our mind from thinking.

Scaling Back on Caffeine

The addiction to caffeine, whether it’s coffee, cola, tea, or sports drinks, may have a big influence on our ability to sleep at night as well as the quality of sleep we’re able to experience. Less coffee and tea may even preclude the need for anti-anxiety medications for sleep. If you can kick the caffeine habit, you may even be able to give up all your medications to sleep.

It’s a good idea to be conscious of our caffeine habit, making sure that our last cup is before 6:00 PM or preferably earlier so that most of the caffeine has a chance to get out of our system long before bedtime. Medications used for sleeping difficulties are more effective when caffeine is not opposing them.

By dealing with the caffeine habit, we’ll discover whether or not we need to take sleep anxiety medications. Many drugs contain caffeine, so if you are on meds, check the label to find out whether it’s possible you’re taking one of the medications with sleep disturbances as an adverse effect.

New Sleep Medications

If you’ve been looking for more effective sleep medications and feel the need for anxiety sleep medications due to a tight, anxious feeling in your chest, it could be that limiting your caffeine intake will make a big difference. Try switching up one of your cups of coffees to start with by making it half decaffeinated. Just doing that may make the sleep medications you’re on feel like new sleep medications that are more effective.

Maybe you’ll develop a taste for decaf. The less caffeine you take in, the better you’ll feel in the long run and the better sleep you’ll get. Those anxiety sleep medications and long term sleep medications may even become a thing of the past.

Consider too that there are all kinds of sleep medications that don’t necessarily come in pill form. Warm milk and honey could be considered one of the alternative sleep medications as it can perform as a very effective sleep medication when taken before bedtime on an empty stomach.

Sleep Medications and Alcohol

The last thing you want do is to take sleep medications and alcohol together. Having a cup of coffee along with medications to help sleep is equally bad. Common sleep medications should be taken without alcohol or coffee. Even decaffeinated coffee has some caffeine in it, so warm milk is the preferred night-time drink due to its calcium content and calming effect.

Surprisingly, although alcohol is both a sedative and a stimulant. So, although we may think of alcohol as one of the common sleep medications, a couple of glasses of wine or a couple shots of alcohol before bed may have the effect of waking you up suddenly in the middle of the night. Excessive alcoholic drinks before bedtime do not usually allow for deep sleep, neither are they safe sleep medications.

What we need are sleep medications that improve deep REM sleep. Drugs that are already present in the body cause some of the key issues with sleep medications. This disturbs our ability to sleep. You should take medications that increase REM sleep  1 to 2 hours prior to bedtime.

The Importance of Sleep

A good night’s sleep is so important to our health and performance that it’s worth ensuring we get a good solid sleep every night. If taking sleep aid medications can help, it’s worth it. One bad night can throw off our schedule and have us nodding out at the worst possible times. When push comes to shove and it’s crunch time, nothing beats having a good night’s sleep under your belt. Medications that increase REM sleep can provide the deep sleep your body needs.

Even if it means temporarily using medications to help get to sleep so that you can wake refreshed in the morning having obtained the necessary REM winks, why not use sleep aid medication within reason? Reasonable use of sleep medications doesn’t necessarily mean that you will become addicted to sleep medications. We all need a little help, once in a while, to get back into a healthy sleeping momentum.

Those late nights tend to catch up with us. Medications to help get to sleep can be a welcome relief from insomnia. Good sleep medications and natural medications for sleep that are non-addictive are best.

Are Sleep Medications Bad for You?

Not all sleep aid medications are bad for you. Even some sleep medications over the counter and especially non addictive sleep medications, natural medications for sleep or herbal medications used for sleep are not harmful to the body, generally speaking. Many herbal medications used for sleep prove that some sleep medications improve sleep and contribute to your overall health and well-being.

Believe it or not, it may actually be unhealthier to miss out on getting the deep sleep your body requires than it is to try out some good sleep medications. Using medications for sleep, especially herbal medications used for sleep can help reset your body clock. It can also help get you back on a healthy sleeping schedule. Used occasionally and within reason, even strong sleep medications can serve a higher purpose.

Non narcotic sleep medications and non addictive sleep medications are widely available at natural food stores or natural health focused stores. There are many types of sleep medications. These include anti psychotic medications for sleep such as teas to help sleep and can be taken with blood pressure medications, melatonin and good sleep medications besides melatonin. It is also quite possible to learn how to use herbs in place of sleep medications.

Reset Your Body Clock

Most healthy people are able to use natural, non habit forming sleep medications and anti-psychotic medications for sleep, –or better yet—you can learn how to sleep without medications and get your sleeping schedule back on track.

For most healthy people, a little extra help calming down for a couple of nights is all it takes to reset their body clock. Usually, for these people, non habit forming sleep medications work just fine. Their body just needs a little nudge to get them going in the right direction so they wake feeling refreshed and regenerated in the morning. Always make sure you’re taking the safest sleep medications in the correct dosage.

Those who have the odd wakeful night probably don’t need to run out and grab medication for sleep. Strong sleep medications over the counter can become a habit or even a dependency that is totally unnecessary. It can start off seemingly innocently but turn into an unhealthy habit. The human body is resilient enough to occasionally withstand a little sleep loss without harm.

Addicted to Sleep Medications

Sleep Medications Addiction, Antiaging Central

Good sleep medications leave you feeling refreshed and able to jump out of bed in the morning. You don’t want to become addicted to sleep medications. Otherwise, stopping sleep medications abruptly becomes very difficult, as has happened to so many.

That’s not to underestimate the importance of sleep. But, only one night’s loss of sleep, in the line of duty, won’t cause any damage and the you can make up for the loss with an earlier-than-usual bedtime the following night. Though it may take a little more effort, in these days of instant gratification, we should try to learn how to sleep without medications.

How to Sleep Without Medications

“What?” you ask, “How will I get the sleep I need without sleep aid medications?”

Believe it or not, you can affect the quality of your sleep by tweaking your diet a little bit. What you eat and when you eat it can greatly determine the quality of your sleep. If the risks of sleep medications bother you and you don’t believe sleep medications improve sleep.

List of Food Believed to Affect Sleep:

  • Fish -salmon, halibut and tuna are full of vitamin B6 which supports the production of melatonin in the body.
  • Chick peas
  • Bananas -contain potassium and vitamin B6.
  • Yogurt -contains calcium to aid sleep.
  • Tart cherry Juice – (tart cherry for sleep hypertensive medications) two times a day
  • Whole grains -contain magnesium which helps you to get to sleep and sleep longer.
  • Almonds -a handful of almonds is full of magnesium
  • Hard boiled eggs -if you wake up several times throughout the night it may mean that you’re not getting enough protein. Hard boiled eggs can help you to get to sleep and stay asleep.
  • Chamomile Tea and Decaffeinated Green Tea (herbal medications used for sleep)
  • Multi grain cereals – Wheaties, multigrain Cheerios, etc. contain magnesium which helps you to sleep longer

You wouldn’t want to eat a large meal right before bedtime for the simple reason that your brain will alert digestive enzymes into action rather than being able to slow down your metabolism for rest. Some food is more difficult to digest than others and could keep you awake all night long.

On the other hand, hunger tends to keep us awake when not addressed. So ,there’s a delicate balance to ensure that hunger pangs don’t strike just as we’re trying to doze off. Often hunger is the reason behind why insomnia even with sleep medications.

Biological Function of Sleep

There are certain functions that our body performs while we’re sleeping, —certain designated biological tasks that can only be completed in darkness during deep sleep.

If you have ever experienced that feeling of not being able to sleep on a full stomach, it’s because your body is being forced to multitask. (This could be one of the key issues with sleep medications.) -Your body knows it’s time for you to sleep so it can get to work on cleaning your liver to prepare for the morning –but you’re sending your body mixed signals.

Nighttime is the time for the body to detoxify itself from all the contaminants imbibed during the day. Teas to help sleep and can be taken with blood pressure medications work in tandem with the body’s normal detoxification.

Serotonin levels are decreasing while melatonin levels are increasing.  Biorhythms are slowing down and switching gears, brain activity has calmed down, breathing is deeper and the pulse rate is lower.

On the rare occasion you are unable to sleep, try non addictive sleep medications and herbal medications used for sleep before grabbing medications for sleep disorders or sleep apnea medications and beware of sleep medications’ side effects. When shopping for sleep medications over the counter, be sure to check the label before purchasing. Strong sleep medications can be addictive and even dangerous.

Sleep Medications for Children with ADHD

We’re all victims of the information age. We crave information. We devour it. Some of us are getting too much input. Much of the information we suck into our brains is overkill.  By the end of the day, useless information is piling up, jamming our circuit boards, stressing us out and keeping us awake to the point that we desperately need anti anxiety medications for sleep.

The same is true for our children. They’re born into an environment of constant digital activity.  Many of them are diagnosed at an early age with some kind of disorder and many are put on medications for ADHD, Asperger’s syndrome, ADD or OCD before they learn their ABC’s. The hardest thing for these kids to learn is how to shut down.

If you believe your child needs medications for sleep, you’ll want the best medications for sleep and especially the best sleep medications to help children sleep. Sleep medications for toddlers and sleep medications for children with ADHD should be prescription sleep aid medications from their pediatrician.

Increased Sensitivity

Many of the safest sleep medications, including children’s cough medicine, have sedative effects. So, when deciding on sleep medications for children, every medication the child is using should be taken into consideration. There are several medications that affect sleep such as meds that contain caffeine.

Children are much more sensitive to meds than adults. Medications to help children sleep are much weaker than those for adults. Parents should not use prescription sleep medications for adults should for their  children. Also, parents should not give sleep medications for teens to younger kids.

Of course, it’s best if they can learn how to sleep without medication. If they’re in the habit of drinking caffeine-loaded soda, caffeine should be avoided in the late afternoon.  Especially avoid caffeine late at night. This is especially bad for children with ADHD.  Not only does caffeine cause the brain to be excitable and alert but caffeine is also a diuretic, which means bathroom runs could interrupt sleep time.

Medications Prescribed for Shift Work Sleep Disorder

Others, such as shift-workers, may need sleep medications that prolong sleep. In cases of those who work throughout the night and need to sleep during daylight hours, sleep aid medications using melatonin as the main ingredient, won’t be of much use. Since it’s not “natural” to sleep during the day and stay awake all night, medications prescribed for shift work sleep disorder is probably the best choice. In that case, you’ll need sleep medications that can cause you to sleep in the daytime and be able to stay alert at night.

When your schedule is backwards or if your job demands that night alertness is imperative, you may need to ask your doctor, “How many times a week is it safe to take sleep medications?”

Why do Some People Have Trouble with Sleep Medications?

If you are one of those who confess, “I have a high tolerance to medications and nothing helps me to sleep,” it’s probably time to visit a professional. Several conditions manifest themselves with sleeping disorders. Sleep medications can address and treat that. Those who have bi polar disorder often present with insomnia or night wakefulness.

Bi polar sleep medications that fit the need more accurately can be prescribed by your doctor or health professional. Sleep medications for schizophrenia, sleep medications for fibromyalgia and sleep medications for Asperger’s can also be prescribed, and where specific health conditions are present, it’s important to find the latest sleep medications specified by a doctor for use by patients of those conditions. In these cases, the best sleep medications over the counter may not have the desired effect.

Medications That Contribute to Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea (which is accompanied by loud snoring) is a common sleeping disorder that causes frequent interruptions in your sleep when pauses in normal breathing occur that may last from a few seconds to minutes and may occur 30 times or more an hour.  When breathing starts up again, it’s usually with a loud snort or gasping sound.

Obstructive sleep apnea happens because the muscles in the back of the throat relax and the tongue blocks the airways.  People suffering from sleep apnea may suffer from morning headaches or tend to feel listless throughout the day. The constant interruption of their sleep cycles causes this.

If you suffer from sleep apnea, avoid medications that contribute to sleep apnea such as opioids –including morphine sulfate, oxycodone or codeine sulfate –which can cause irregular breathing or temporarily stop normal breathing.

Medications for Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition that should be diagnosed by a doctor because only a doctor can examine the patient and deduce whether the condition is strictly a sleeping disorder or whether there are other causes or conditions bringing on the sleeping disorder.

Your doctor may recommend a CPAP (a continuous positive airway pressure) device.  This is a machine that uses a mask that fits over the nose and mouth and blows air into your air passages to keep them open during sleep.

Oral appliance therapy (OAT) can also be used to make sure the back of the throat stays open during sleep.  Sleep apnea aids can help the performance of medications for maintaining sleep and possibly help you learn how to sleep without medications.

A doctor may also prescribe sleep disorder medications. If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, your doctor may try you out on different sleep apnea medications to ascertain which ones are the best sleep medications for you as an individual. He may even set out a plan to wean you off sleep apnea medications or switch from strong sleep medications to natural medications for sleep.

Alzheimer’s Sleep Medications

Studies, funded in part by Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, showed that depriving mice of sleep caused a 25% increase in amyloid beta levels.  Amyloid beta cause the plaque that causes Alzheimer’s disease to appear earlier. When the mice were allowed to sleep, levels were lower.

This study demonstrates the importance of sleep and especially the importance of providing those suffering from Alzheimer’s the correct Alzheimer sleep medications.

Researchers noted that not only does the rest of Alzheimer’s increase with age, the sleep/wake cycle also starts to break down, with older adults progressively getting less sleep. It’s important to know what sleep medications for dementia and sleep apnea effects that are safe for elderly are available.

Potential Links Between Sleep Deprivation and Alzheimer’s

Researchers are considering epidemiological studies to discover if chronic sleep loss in the young and middle aged adults increases risk of Alzheimer’s disease in later life. These studies show the need to prioritize the treatment of sleep disorders, not only for their immediate effects, but also for possible long-term impacts on brain health.

It’s imperative that the Alzheimer patient’s doctor knows which over the counter sleep aid medications they are taking. Their doctor knows what the sleep medications safe for elderly people are and will prescribe the best sleep medications for elderly people. Common sleep medications that work well for younger people or even prescription sleep aid medications designated for someone else may not be appropriate for an Alzheimer patient.

The aging process affects the production of hormones. When the production of melatonin is under par, the body’s ability to fall asleep is hindered.  This is a normal result of aging.

Possibly, the best sleep medications for elderly people could be melatonin if their body has slowed down the production of melatonin.  In effect this would be considered hormonal therapy.  Melatonin is one of the sleep medications safe for the elderly.  It is non-addictive so it could be recommended as one of the natural sleep medications for dementia.

Instruct Your Body to Sleep

Sooner or later, if we want to maintain our health and sanity, we’re going to have to learn how to wind down at the end of the day. It helps to have a bed-time procedure or routine that you stick to rigidly, even when using medications that help you sleep. Good sleep medications work better when you’ve prepared yourself mentally and psychologically for sleep.

Even the most effective sleep medications and the most popular sleep medications won’t perform well when they are strongly resisted. Work with them to get the best out of your sleep medications. Try not to fight against them by keeping an active mind while the medications to help you sleep are working in the opposite direction. Allow them to do their job. Instead of focusing on your sleep disorder, allow the sleep disorder medications to take over and bring about a good, sound sleep order.

The Importance of Routine

It helps to start winding down for sleep two hours or more ahead of bedtime. If you’re serious about sleep, get on the attack. Turn off the computer. –Yes, and all the other gadgets. It must be done. Most types of sleep medications should be taken at least an hour before you intend to sleep. But, taking sleep aid medications is only part of your sleep preparation.

Set up a regular routine starting at the same time each evening (two to three hours ahead of your desired bedtime). You may want to set your alarm as a reminder in the beginning until you develop the habit. Write out a numbered list of procedures and put it up on the fridge or bathroom mirror.

Though it may seem silly, the more regimented you are about this, the more your subconscious mind will clue in. Sleep medications for insomnia may become a thing of the past.

Your bedtime list could be as simple as: #1 Shut down all computers and devices. #2 Shut down Internet (or move modem out of bedroom) #3 Drink warm milk. #4 Dim the lights. #5 Fill bath with hot water and lavender bath salts. #5 Take your non addictive sleep medications, etc.

Find a routine that fits your personality but try to unwind, relax and calm down as much as possible, whatever it takes. Yoga, deep-breathing, soothing music and scented candles can help.

Overall, Remember:

The best sleep medications, medications for sleep apnea, medications for sleep disorders and even very strong sleep medications will not perform as well as possible when they’re up against the human will. If the brain has made up its mind that it’s simply not going to cooperate, the most effective sleep medications may be powerless against it. Even when you do fall asleep, the quality of sleep you experience may not be optimal.

Natural Sleep Medications

Some of the most popular sleep medications are the natural sleep medications. With all the different sleep medications, medications for insomnia, medications for sleep disorders, for bipolar disorder and medications for sleep apnea, the types of sleep medications that are becoming most popular are non-narcotic sleep medications.

Non-narcotic sleep medications are those that do not contain narcotics or opioids which can be habit-forming and possibly even addictive. Being addicted to sleep medication means that stopping sleep medications abruptly is very difficult and stressful. There are many alternative sleep medications and non benzodiazepine sleep medications, non addictive sleep medications and non narcotic sleep medications available that have been proven effective in bringing about a deep, restful sleep. Many good sleep medications consist of natural herbs that calm the thought processes and gently sooth ragged nerves. You can learn how to use herbs in place of sleep medications. Then stopping sleep medications abruptly will not present a problem.

Because melatonin is a hormone, it works with your biological clock but does not necessarily increase your drive to sleep or help you to sleep longer. For some people who are possibly lacking in their natural production of melatonin, supplementing melatonin may be a safe sleep medication to help correct their body clock. As such, travelers can use melatonin to remedy jet lag. The elderly can consider it one of the safer sleep medications.

By 8 p.m., natural melatonin levels start to rise and continue to increase until about 3 a.m. That peak zone is called “biological time zero” and is also the time your body temperature is at its lowest. Since melatonin is one of the non benzodiazepine sleep medications and an over the counter sleep aid that’s relatively inexpensive, it has become fairly popular and many have discovered it to be a useful supplement as well as one of the popular medications that help you sleep while it supports the natural hormonal production of melatonin.

Melatonin as a Supplement

Melatonin is a supplement which means it doesn’t require the FDA’s stamp of approval. There has been scientific evidence to show that some supplements that present melatonin as a natural and safe sleep medication don’t contain what is stated on the label. That’s why it’s important to make sure it is obtained through a reputable company that correctly labels their products. Otherwise, you may experience sleep medications side effects which may include: headaches, nightmares  or a morning “hangover”.

Many over the counter sleep medications derived from melatonin contain higher dosages than what a doctor would recommend —up to 10 milligrams. It’s important to take the correct dosage which is usually no more than a milligram to start off with.

If you do well on melatonin, you may end up choosing it as the best medication for sleep. As far as sleep disorder medications go, melatonin is one of the fairly cheap and dependable over the counter sleep medications to choose from.

Remember, melatonin is a hormone, so doctors are not convinced that relying on it too much is a good idea. Apparently, it can de-sensitize the body’s receptors to where they won’t respond to a lower dose of melatonin. Should you decide to stop taking it as medications to help you sleep, you may have difficulty sleeping and your body may demand more to achieve the same results.

Sleep Medications During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time when a mom gets to share her body with a brand new creation taking up residence in there. That tiny person partakes of everything his mom partakes of, whether it’s optimal nutrition or dangerous substances. When Mom needs a little help getting to sleep, there are safe medications for sleep during pregnancy. It goes without saying that non benzodiazepine sleep medications and non-narcotic sleep medications are the types of sleep medications she’ll be looking at. Probably the best sleep medications during pregnancy are derived from melatonin, lavender and natural sleep medications.

Medications okay to take while pregnant for sleep are generally the herbal-based type. To be on the safe side, check the label to make sure. Some herbs are not recommended for use by pregnant women. Of course, pregnant women should consult a doctor before use of use anti-psychotic medications for sleep and non-addictive sleep medications to avoid the risks of sleep medications. It’s best to learn how to use herbs in place of sleep medications if at all possible during pregnancy.

As pregnancy progresses and the little passenger becomes more and more active, it’s natural for a mother’s sleep to be interrupted by the baby’s activities. There’s a wrestling match going on inside of her belly keeping her awake. At the late stage of pregnancy, daytime naps can provide a lot of good solid REM sleep for both mother and child in place of taking sleep medications during pregnancy.

It’s best to try to avoid the risks of sleep medications as well as caffeine in all its forms. Remember, junior is partaking of any caffeine you imbibe, whether it’s in a coffee, black tea, some herbal teas, soda, sports drinks or chocolate.

A pregnant woman’s heart is already beating between 10 to 20 beats more per minute and pumping an extra 50% more blood through her veins. Hard to understand how so many mothers survive pregnancy? Don’t worry. Just know that pregnancy is a time to avoid risks of all kinds, whether risks of sleep medications, caffeine, anti-biotics, pain-killers or even so-called safe medications for sleep during pregnancy.

If quitting caffeine doesn’t help your sleep problem during pregnancy, talk to your doctor before reaching for medications used for sleep difficulties. It’s best to avoid over the counter sleep medications unless there’s a clear message on the bottle that it’s safe for pregnant women.

Sleep medications during pregnancy can be totally natural and safe for the baby, but sleep medications that prolong sleep can be dangerous for the fetus. Make sure you’re using safe medications for sleep during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Sleep Medications and Breastfeeding

Breast milk is not filtered. Whatever the mother has imbibed will eventually show up in her breast milk. Now that we’re aware of that fact, conscientious breast-feeding moms will pump their breasts before drinking alcohol and afterwards.

Since they don’t want their baby drinking alcohol-laced breast milk, they will give their baby the milk that was pumped out of their breasts prior to their consumption of alcohol and discard the milk produced an hour or so after consuming the alcohol. Alcohol can seriously harm a baby and even stunt its growth.

This is something to consider if you must take sleep disorder medications. Safe medications for sleep during pregnancy may not be the safest medications to take for sleep while breastfeeding. Even FDA approved sleep medications are not necessarily safe for breastfeeding. (Unless you are sure to pump your breasts of the contaminated milk and don’t present it to the baby.) It’s really best for mother and child if mom can learn how to use herbs in place of sleep medications.

Sleep Medications for Fibromyalgia

Most fibromyalgia patients have difficulty sleeping.  The most common thing is a feeling of non-refreshing or non-restorative sleep.  People with fibromyalgia experience less deep sleep, more later stages of sleep, and more frequent arousals during the night than others do.

Insomnia is very common in fibromyalgia. Medications to increase rem sleep and new sleep medications approved for use in fibromyalgia such as Pregabalin (Lyrica) help to increase deep sleep.

Over 50% of fibromyalgia patients experience restless legs syndrome. When restless legs syndrome and insomnia are successfully treated, Fibromyalgia is greatly improved. That makes sleep medications for Fibromyalgia relevant.

Some Sleep Medications for ADHD Patients

Benadryl which is sold without prescription is a non habit-forming antihistamine.  However as one of the sleep medications for children with ADHD, there is a downside to Benadryl: it can cause sleepiness for up to 60 hours in some children.  On the other hand, 10% of ADHD patients experience severe paradoxical agitation with Benadryl.

Some doctors recommend tests for their ADHD patients such as the Aid Home Sleeping Test, polysomnogram, or a multiple sleep latency test.  Doctors may use additional treatment options to manage sleep challenges, including medications for sleep with ADHD.

The next level of treatment is sleep medications by a prescription.  Most clinicians avoid giving sleeping pills to children because of their habit-forming qualities.  That’s because people quickly develop a tolerance to them and then require ever-increasing doses.

Avoiding Habit-Forming Sleep Aids

The next prescription sleep medications for ADHD patients tend to be non addictive:

Melatonin is a popular sleep medication that is available without prescription at most pharmacies and Health Food Stores.  Melatonin may not be adequately effective the first night of use but its effectiveness will increase over several nights’ use. Compared to other sleep aid medications, melatonin is one of the over-the counter sleep medications that is probably gentler than any medications to help your child sleep through the night.

Periactin, the prescription antihistamine, works like Benadryl but is able to suppress dreams. Doctors consider it to be one of the sleep medications for anxiety.

Clonidine is the sleep medication for ADHD of choice for the hyper-active ADHD child.  Its sedative effects last for about 4 hours.  Doctors recommend a dose of 0.05 to 0.1 milligrams 1 hour before bed.

Use of Anti-Depressant Medications

Because of their sedative side effects, some clinicians recommend anti-depressant medications.  Patients would then use Trazadone (Desyrel) or mirtazapine (Remeron) low doses.  These medications tend to make waking up in the morning more difficult than before.

Parents of children with ADHD know what a precious commodity sleep is. But they also want to know what are the names of medications that are given to children with ADHD are. It’s easy to understand parents who are interested in any medications to help your child sleep through the night.

Although most children with ADHD have problems sleeping, ADHD research often overlooks this problem. Lately, the ADHD community has recognized that sleep difficulties are associated with ADHD and that, oddly enough, the best sleep medications for ADHD are stimulant-class medications. In other  words, medications for sleep with ADHD is the opposite of what one would expect.

The Two-Alarm System for Wake-Up

When patients of ADHD are on Trazadone (Desyrel) or mirtazapine (Remeron), they will normally experience more difficulty waking up in the morning. To make it easier on them, there are a few ways to approach the problem.  One way is the two-alarm system.

To prepare for the following morning, medication, such as Adrafinil, Modafinil or Provigil (see “What is Adrafinil?” and “Adrafinil Vs Modafinil”, “Modafinil Vs Adrafinil” below) and a glass of water is set up on a bedside table. An alarm is set to go off one hour before the person needs to get up.  When the alarm rings, the patient takes the medication that has been set beside his bed so that by the time the second alarm goes off, the medication has kicked in, gently supporting the transition from the sleep medications side effects to waking up.

Sunset/Sunrise-Simulating Lights

Another approach to resetting the body clock or biorhythms is to use sunset/sunrise-simulating lights. These lights can be used along with medications to help sleep or alone. However, they are not cheap and can run about $400.

What is Adrafinil?

Adrafinil, Antiaging central

Adrafinil is a nootropic, introduced in 1995 that has had impressive clinical trial results.  Recently it has been prescribed to treat Alzheimer’s disease since it promotes motivation, alertness and focus. This nootropic is a version of Modafinil, except milder. Once Adrafinil is processed in the body, it is metabolized into Modafinil.

Adrafinil improves awareness and focus, determination and drive. It provides energy to burn without any side effects. If fact, there are very few Side Effects Of Adrafinil. This is a boon for those who take sleep medications for fibromyalgia, sleep medications used for sleep apnea, sleep medications for the elderly or any deep sleep medications. Taken an hour before wake-up time, this nootropic can help those using sleep medications to smoothly transition into the day. It is known to provide dramatically more energy without interfering with sleep patterns. Adrafinil is a novel vigilance promoting agent.

Medications and Sleep

Like Modafinil, Adrafinil’s cognitive benefits are enhanced by noted improvements in day-time alertness, motivation, mood and energy levels. Despite objections to Adrafinil, it also doesn’t generate the irritability, anxiousness and nervousness routinely experienced with the use of other stimulants. Using Adrafinil doesn’t interfere with your other medications and sleep.  In fact, Adrafinil can make waking up easier for those who use sleep medications for fibromyalgia, sleep medications for the elderly, anxiety sleep medications, etc.

What is Adrafinil’s Legal Status?

Britain does not measure Adrafinil under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, a legislation that governs the regulation of drugs. This means that it is not regulated. Adrafinil’s legal status and nootropics in general, remain in a grey area. It is lawful for purchase by British residents, but only for personal use.

In the U.S, Adrafinil is currently legal and can be bought, prescription free, as an alternative to Modafinil. The manufactured moniker, Olmifon, was discontinued in 2011,. But, people can still purchase Adrafinil easily online, despite any objections to Adrafinil.

Adrafinil Vs Modafinil

Adrafinil and Modafinil are two of the most popular cognitive enhancement drugs available today for speed of cognition, memory, productivity and alertness. So, exactly what are the main differences between these two nootropics?

The edge that these types of nootropics can provide is becoming increasingly sought after. So, Adrafinil Vs Modafinil –which is the best drug to use? They both offer similar effects. The distinctions lie in mechanism of action, side-effects and legal status.

Less Metabolic Intensity & Strain

In comparison to Modafinil, Adrafinil does not seem to be as intense. In fact, Adrafinil is a prodrug for Modafinil which is converted to Modafinil in the liver. Although the liver metabolizes Adrafinil to produce Modafinil, they are different from each other in that Adrafinil is not a stimulant, though it has the effects of a stimulant without the headaches and the hyperactivity.  People use it to reduce sleepiness, increase motivation and promote wakefulness.

Students have discovered. “What is Adrafinil?” because it increases memory recall and formation making it the drug of choice for students.

Adrafinil Vs Modafinil (Side Effects)

The side effects of Modafinil are similar to Adrafinil – headaches, stomach problems, fever, nausea, and in some rare cases, it can cause skin disorders like DRESS, TEN or SJS. In that sense, both Modafinil and Adrafinil are safe to take in low doses. Most users never experience any negative side effects.

Objections to Adrafinil

One of the main objections to Adrafinil is that because the liver processes it, extended use may have detrimental effects on the liver. So far, there has been no evidence to prove or disprove this suggestion. Other side effects include headaches, nausea, and stomach trouble.

Other Objections to Adrafinil

People look at nootropics as a way to improve their brain’s long-term health.  Unlike other nootropics, people can safely use Adrafinil at recommended dosages, but some side effects do occur with the drug, including:

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Nervousness
  • Stomach problems

High doses of Adrafinil may result in increased blood pressure and cause heart problems.  The more serious risks are liver problems.  In high doses over extended periods of time, Adrafinil can increase the liver enzymes and cause liver damage.  However, instances of side effects are very low, especially when used as directed.

Modafinil Vs Adrafinil

Modafinil Introduction

So what is Modafinil? It is a eugeroic used to treat narcolepsy. The health community generally considers them non-addictive and not a cause of agitation or nervousness.

Modafinil is a racemic mixture with equal amounts of left and right-handed enantiomers. Enantiomers are two forms in which large numbers of chemicals exist. Both forms are chemically and structurally identical mirror images of each other. They are the left and right versions of a drug. Typically, one enantiomer is responsible for the majority of the drug’s negative effects, while the other may contribute to the positive effects.

Interestingly, Modafinil is an equal combination of S and R enantiomers which means that both have a psychoactive function. The enantiomers in tandem provide the ideal effect on body and mind, making it a go-to for those who depend on deep sleep medications.

How Modafinil Works

Modafinil works through histamine signaling, enhancing histamine activity by stimulating the central nervous system which impacts other nerve fibers. That roughly explains how it can stimulate a fatigued body. There is also improved mood with Modafinil and positive improvements are seen in focus, analytics capability and memory.

In Britain, Modafinil is a prescription only drug.  In the states, where its brand name is Provigil, it is a scheduled drug which necessitates a prescription.

Differences between Modafinil vs Adrafinil are more apparent concerning the processing of each drug. Modafinil is processed mainly in the liver through metabolic activity and the enzyme cytochrome P450 (CYP). (CYP is a class of enzymes involved in the metabolism of medications.

Objections to Adrafinil arise due to the fact that it is changed into Modafinil in the liver. This means that it must rely on greater enzyme activity to be processed effectively.

Enzymes are fascinating anomalies that exist in living organisms to catalyze specific reactions biochemically in the body. Molecules or “substrates” are converted into “products”. Each metabolic process requires enzymes to react within its host at fast enough rates to sustain life.

Adrafinil Vs Modafinil: Which One Should You Use?

Remember, the comparison between these two drugs include the possibilities of side effects, potency and speed. Modafinil is safe to take, doesn’t cause liver damage and acts quicker once taken. However, to purchase it, you must have a doctor’s prescription.

Adrafinil, on the other hand, does not require a doctor’s prescription, but can cause liver damage as well as other side effects. Also, its speed and potency is slightly less than Modafinil.

Adrafinil Vs Modafinil: Dosage

Adrafinil dosage is suggested to be between 600 to 1200 milligrams per day.  A low dose to begin with is advisable. This can be increased according to your body’s reaction and tolerance to the drug. To prevent a sleepless night, avoid taking Adrafinil in the afternoon and evening. Ideally, it should only be taken three times a week for no longer than five months, to prevent the build-up of enzymes in the liver.

Adrafinil Vs Modafinil: Benefits

One of the key reasons for the development of Adrafinil was to help people with sleeping problems to adjust their body clocks. Currently, it is being used in Europe by sleep apnea and dementia patients, helping to normalize their sleep patterns. Those who are on medications for anxiety that regulate your sleep cycle, those on sleep medications for dementia, medications for sleep with ADHD or medications used for sleep difficulties benefit by taking Adrafinil an hour before their designated wake up time.

Energy Boost

Because Adrafinil increases the hypocretin level, many people experience a rise in energy.  There is an increase in catecholamines, also boosting energy levels. Neurotransmitters, involved in the brain’s adrenergic systems, create high awareness levels which increase the attention span and focus, boosting physical stamina.

Mood Improvement

Also, your mood will improve. The reason is because Adrafinil increases serotonin and dopamine levels. It’s these neurotransmitters that increase a person’s pleasure sense, decrease anxiety and stress levels and improve overall well-being. The improvements in mood leads to motivation and a desire to be more productive.

The stimulant-like effects of Adrafinil enhance cognitive thinking, mood and energy.  It stimulates the brain’s glutamate receptors which improves memory and the speed of memory recall.

Adrafinil affects everyone a little differently. Generally speaking, women respond more sensitively to drugs and stimulants than men.  When commencing a new medication, the wise approach is to begin slowly, using only the recommended dosage until you discover how it works in your body.

Those who are on medications for maintaining sleep or sleep medications for Asperger’s syndrome will find that Adrafinil helps reset their body clock.

Modafinil Vs Adrafinil: Effects

Although Modafinil is pretty much the same as Adrafinil, it goes to work faster and lasts longer.  Both of these two nootropics were created by the same company to enhance focus, alertness, and wakefulness. Modafinil stimulates the nervous system and increases energy levels both physically and mentally. It helps healthy adults to stay awake and alert for up to 40 hours.

The cognitive affects achieved with Modafinil are quite similar to those of Adrafinil –memory improvement, focus and speed. For this reason, many have reported that tasks such as reading, writing, talking and giving presentations are easier to perform.

Adrafinil is considered a smoother stimulant supplement, allowing you to experience a high level of energy and no negative burn-out when it leaves your system.

Side Effects with Modafinil

Since the liver doesn’t metabolize Modafinil like it does with Adrafinil, it means Modafinil is safer for long-term use.  The metabolic process puts stress on the liver. This conversion process can eventually result in hepatoxicity. That could make Modafinil the better choice.

Are Modafinil and Adrafinil Legal?

In the United States, Adrafinil is legal but not regulated. Therefore, the FDA does not control or approve it and does not consider it a prescription drug. Like many other nootropics, people can legally purchase it online.

The U.S. regulates Modafinil. The FDA approved it for the treatment of narcolepsy and cannot be found over the counter, meaning you must get a doctor’s prescription to purchase and use it. When it comes to other countries, they may not be the case. Thus, many international residents may opt to order the drug online. However, before you do this, make sure to look at the laws of your country. Since Modafinil is not legal in the U.S. without a doctor’s prescription, many folks use Adrafinil as a worthwhile alternative.

More on Adrafinil

Adrafinil is usually prescribed for those who suffer excessive tiredness, as in fibromyalgia patients or sleep apnea patients, along with those with attention-deficit order (ADD/ADHD). Those on sleep medications for ADHD, sleep medications for sleep apnea, medications for children with ADHD or medications for shift work sleep disorders, etc. can benefit from using Adrafinil first thing in the morning.

In Adrafinil, hypocretin, a neurotransmitter that controls the body’s alert and awake state, rises. High levels of hypocretin give you the energy needed to get through the day with energy to spare.  Along with an increase in hypocretin, dopamine histamine and norepinephrine levels increase, all of which cause energy levels to rise. (Norepinephrine is closely related to adrenaline.)

Since Adrafinil slows the production of dopamine and boosts the production of serotonin, people can use it as a mood enhancer when they need motivation.  This stimulation of the glutamate receptors improves synapse plasticity which improves learning and memory performance.

How Does Adrafinil Work?

  • The key nootropic action of Adrafinil is thought to be the increase of chemicals in the brain. Adrafinil may boost Hypocretin, which is a brain neurotransmitter which promotes appetite, alertness and arousal. This increase of Hypocretin is believed to set off and an increase in dopamine, histamine and norepinephrine levels.
  • Another proposed theory is that Adrafinil stimulates the glutamate pathways while hindering the GABAeric ones, leading to wakefulness.

Some History of Adrafinil

Two chemists discovered Adrafinil while working for a pharmaceutical company called Laboratoires Lafon in France in 1974 . The two were screening Adrafinil in search of analgesics when they discovered psychostimulant-like effects such as hyperactivity and wakefulness in animals.

Between 1977 and 1978, it was tested in humans for the treatment of narcolepsy.  Adrafinil went on the market in France in 1984 and was marketed for the treatment of narcolepsy in 1985.

Modafinil was discovered two years after the discovery of Adrafinil.  In animal studies, researchers found Modafinil more potent than Adrafinil.  It was approved in 1994 in France and in 1998 Modafinil was approved in the United States.

Adrafinil, known as Olmifon in France, was discontinued in 2011, while Modafinil was kept on.

Adrafinil Research

In studies on Adrafinil, researchers focused on sleep suppression and focus enhancement in relation to narcolepsy.  The preponderance of Meta-analysis in narcoleptic patients indicates that the nootropic, while very effective in day-time sleep suppression, does not affect night sleep.

Adrafinil’s nootropic qualities are still under investigation. However, its benefits are thought to derive from the neurotransmitter, hypocretin, which links directly to alertness and increased focus. As hypocretin transmitter levels are increased, hormones increase as well as other neurotransmitters. Increases of dopamine and histamine increase levels of energy and happiness.

Clever Canines

Researchers at the University of Toronto, Ontario in Canada decided to test the effects of Adrafinil on learning capability. To do so, they enlisted the help of canines to carry out a few basic cognitive tasks. The researchers trained the beagle in learning tasks involving deciphering with breaks throughout.

In order for each animal to be tested accurately, the team utilized a crossover-designed framework. The results of Adrafinil treatment were: a dramatic enhancement in learning, a decrease in error making and overall focus.

With the advent of nootropics designed to enhance brain performance, leaps have been made in reducing unwanted side effects such as dependents, migraines, depression, insomnia and agoraphobia. Certainly, Adrafinil fits the picture of a supplement with few if any adverse effects. Its popularity is increasing on every level of society from entrepreneurs, doctors and professionals to truck drivers and students. Used correctly, Adrafinil is extremely effective.

Modafinil (Also Known as Provigil)

Originally, professor Michel Jouvet, who is a neurophysiologist and emeritus experimental medicine professor at Lafon Laboratories, developed Modafinil in France. He derived Modafinil from a series of benzhydryl sulfinyl compounds, including Adrafinil, which had been used experimentally in the treatment of narcolepsy in 1986.

Modafinil is the primary metabolite of Adrafinil, lacking the polar-OH group on its terminal amide and has similar activity to the parent drug.  Since 1994, France used it under the name Modiodal, and since 1998 in the US it appears as Provigil.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Modafinil in 1998 for treatment of narcolepsy. Additionally in 2003, the FDA approved it for shift work sleep disorder and obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea.

In December 2002, the UK approved Modafinil for use.  Cephalon Inc., who leased the rights from Lafon and purchased the company in 2001, markets it in the U.S.

Foreign Legion’s Drug of Choice

Amphetamines is the drug traditionally used in combat situations where troops face sleep deprivation during lengthy missions. Recently, the military of several countries have shown interest in Modafinil as an alternative. The French government even reported that the foreign legion used Modafinil during certain covert operations.

The UK’s Ministry of Defense commissioned research into Modafinil, spending £300,000 on one investigation.

In 2011, the Indian Air Force announced that Modafinil was included in contingency plans.

The US military has approved Modafinil for use on certain Air Force missions and placed it under investigation for use in other situations. In 2012, Modafinil was approved by the Air Force as the “Go Pill” for fatigue management, while the use of dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine) has been discontinued.

Sleepy Astronauts

During long-term missions aboard the International Space Stations, astronauts are likely to experience fatigue. The Canadian Medical Association Journal reports that, in cases like these, Modafinil is “available to crew to optimize performance while fatigued”. Furthermore, it helps improve disruptions in circadian rhythms experienced by astronauts.

Modafinil not only improves daytime alertness but improves the quality of sleep for people like astronauts. What’s your mission?

Modafinil and Birth Control

Unless you’re trying to get pregnant, you may want to reconsider the idea of using Modafinil/Provigil. It has been noted that Modafinil/Provigil can render certain birth control methods less effective. The Pill, hormonal contraception, implants, skin patches, injections, and vaginal rings may not be effective in the prevention of pregnancy while you’re on Provigil. If you’re using birth control and want to take Modafinil/Provigil, ask your doctor to recommend the best methods of birth control to use while taking Modafinil/Provigil.

As of yet, whether modafinil passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby is unknown Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. (Caught me fair and square on this one though!) Here’s a rewrite:

As of yet, whether or not Modafinil can pass into a mother’s breast milk is not certain. As a precaution, it’s advisable to talk to your doctor about it if you breast-feed.
