Originally, professor Michel Jouvet, who is a neurophysiologist and emeritus experimental medicine professor at Lafon Laboratories, developed Modafinil in France. He derived Modafinil from a series of benzhydryl sulfinyl compounds, including Adrafinil, which had been used experimentally in the treatment of narcolepsy in 1986.
Modafinil is the primary metabolite of Adrafinil, lacking the polar-OH group on its terminal amide and has similar activity to the parent drug. Since 1994, France used it under the name Modiodal, and since 1998 in the US it appears as Provigil.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Modafinil in 1998 for treatment of narcolepsy. Additionally in 2003, the FDA approved it for shift work sleep disorder and obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea.
In December 2002, the UK approved Modafinil for use. Cephalon Inc., who leased the rights from Lafon and purchased the company in 2001, markets it in the U.S.
Foreign Legion’s Drug of Choice
Amphetamines is the drug traditionally used in combat situations where troops face sleep deprivation during lengthy missions. Recently, the military of several countries have shown interest in Modafinil as an alternative. The French government even reported that the foreign legion used Modafinil during certain covert operations.
The UK’s Ministry of Defense commissioned research into Modafinil, spending £300,000 on one investigation.
In 2011, the Indian Air Force announced that Modafinil was included in contingency plans.
The US military has approved Modafinil for use on certain Air Force missions and placed it under investigation for use in other situations. In 2012, Modafinil was approved by the Air Force as the “Go Pill” for fatigue management, while the use of dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine) has been discontinued.
During long-term missions aboard the International Space Stations, astronauts are likely to experience fatigue. The Canadian Medical Association Journal reports that, in cases like these, Modafinil is “available to crew to optimize performance while fatigued”. Furthermore, it helps improve disruptions in circadian rhythms experienced by astronauts.

Modafinil and Birth Control
Unless you’re trying to get pregnant, you may want to reconsider the idea of using Modafinil/Provigil. It has been noted that Modafinil/Provigil can render certain birth control methods less effective. The Pill, hormonal contraception, implants, skin patches, injections, and vaginal rings may not be effective in the prevention of pregnancy while you’re on Provigil. If you’re using birth control and want to take Modafinil/Provigil, ask your doctor to recommend the best methods of birth control to use while taking Modafinil/Provigil.
